Writing

What started with our Writers Salon has grown into something more…

The Adler Arts Center is excited to expand our writing programming beyond the salon experience with new workshops and opportunities for writers to learn, connect, and create together. Whether you’re exploring creative writing for the first time or continuing a lifelong practice, we’re building a welcoming space for literary arts at Adler.

And we’re only getting started — we hope to continue growing our writing offerings in the months ahead.

Alix Anne Shaw is an American poet, sculptor, filmmaker, and multimedia visual artist known for work that blends lyrical language with experimental visual forms. She is the author of three acclaimed poetry collections: Undertow (2007), which won the Lexi Rudnitsky Poetry Prize; Dido in Winter (2014); and Rough Ground (2018). Her poetry and criticism have appeared in literary journals including Harvard Review, Fence, Denver Quarterly, and New American Writing.

In addition to her literary career, Shaw is an accomplished visual artist whose work spans sculpture, neon, video, weaving, installation, and public art. Her exhibitions have appeared at venues including the Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago, Kriti Gallery in India, and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in South Korea. Her artistic practice often explores public space, memory, technology, feminism, and the emotional dislocation of modern life.

Shaw earned degrees from Yale University, George Mason University, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she completed MFAs in both writing and sculpture. Based in Milwaukee and Chicago, she has also taught poetry workshops and community writing programs for over two decades.

Trying to start a piece but not sure where to begin? Stuck on where to go next? This workshop focuses on the tools and techniques writers use to solve common problems.

Students are asked to come with a project idea or project now in progress that they would like to work on during the session. In week one, we will discuss practical obstacles to getting started: how to establish and maintain a regular writing practice, organizing your ideas, a framing a narrative structure.

Week two will move into the nitty-gritty of what happens on the page. We will discuss handling multiple points of view, using effective flashbacks, writing dialogue, controlling rate of revelation, and overcoming other stumbling blocks.

In week three, we begin the process of refinement. Students learn tips on how to solicit and offer constructive feedback, working hands-on with one another to revise, reframe, and otherwise strengthen their drafts.

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to share their processes, dilemmas, and works in progress. Our goal is not to come away with a perfect piece, but develop a set of tools to help you achieve your future writing goals.
